Momentum: Meeyoung Kim

S2A presents Meeyoung Kim’s solo exhibition . During her studies abroad, the artist experienced a phenomenal moment on a train heading out to the suburbs, where she witnessed a long field of rose vines through the window. The red rose field spread beyond the barbed wire fence, momentarily disregarding distance, drawing near and then receding. This continuous synesthetic moment, created by the difference in speed and parallax, inspired her to transfer it onto canvas. The fleeting appearance of the red roses approaching her was depicted with thick, voluminous paint, while the sense of speed was expressed through brushstrokes.

Meeyoung Kim captures synesthetic moments naturally encountered in daily life through her paintings. Her incredible works, reminiscent of deeply imprinted moments, have left a strong impression to the audience with their beautiful color combinations and bold brushstrokes. However, in her process, Kim encountered moments where dynamic traces emerged more forcefully than her intention, leading her to focus on expressing the speed of the moment, attempting a new approach. She aimed to create a perpetually moving image by placing visual illusionary devices on the canvas. She chose linen over canvas, allowing the paint to seep in and bleed out, creating an effect where the paint seems to be pulled down and pushed up, defying gravity. Additionally, she selected bolder and more saturated colors than before, expressing overlapping forms and adding strong linear touches to maximize the sense of fluid movement. These devices not only create an eternally moving effect but also expand our gaze and imagination beyond the confines of the exhibition space.

Through this exhibition, the artist showcases around 40 works, from her early works that drifted slowly during her early career to the well-known series , , and that captured the audience’s attention, along with the new series and , which aim for another leap forward.
