Overview

In 2025, S2A brings together the works of three virtuosi who represent the essence of Korean art—Jeong Seon, Kim Jeong-hui, and Yun Hyong-keun—creating a space where tradition and modernity converge. This exhibition explores the link between traditional Korean art and contemporary aesthetics, offering a multifaceted perspective on the artistic achievements of these three masters.

This exhibition features a selection of works that highlight the artistic innovations of these masters. Among them is Boating on the Yeoncheon River in the Year of Imsul (漣江壬戌帖), a late masterpiece by Jeong Seon, who transcended the conventions of idealized landscape painting to pioneer the real scenery landscape painting tradition. Also on view are his landscape paintings, bird-and-flower paintings, and animal paintings. The exhibition further displays a range of works by Kim Jeong-hui, who, while rooted in classical traditions, developed a distinctive calligraphic style. His couplets, wooden plaques with his calligraphy, poetry manuscripts, and letters are shown chronologically and by format, offering insight into his artistic world. In particular, Kim Jeong-hui’s letters from different periods—at age 39 (mid-career), 62 (during his exile in Jejudo), and 71 (his time in Gwacheon)—offer a glimpse into the evolution of his Chusache script. The exhibition also features the abstract art of Yun Hyong-keun, who carried forward the essence of Eastern aesthetics and philosophy into a modern context. Through this expansive artistic world, which bridges tradition and contemporary expression, the exhibition provides a multifaceted view of their artistic achievements and approaches the aesthetic dialogue between past and present through painterly connections.

As Korean art garners international attention today, this exhibition serves as a meaningful opportunity to explore the roots of traditional Korean art and its modern expansions as well as the coexistence of tradition and contemporary aesthetics.

We invite you to experience the artistic legacy that transcends time and genre through the works of three masters: Jeong Seon, Kim Jeong-hui, and Yun Hyong-keun.
